RICH - Reading Images for the Cultural Heritage

In the RICH project, state-of-the-art techniques from artificial intelligence are extended and tailored for the automatic recognition and classification of archaeological objects.
Archaeologists try to reconstruct the past using traces left in the ground and landscape. They have been studying retrieved objects by examining variations in form, texture (fabric), and decoration, in a scientific manner for over 200 years. The RICH project has developed techniques to support archaeological field work and subsequent analyses. It is expected that these systems, together with follow-up work, will have a great impact on the way that archaeologist perform their field work.

The RICH project officially ended on August 15, 2009. The results of the project are presented on this website.

RICH is part of the NWO programme for Continuous Access To Cultural Heritage (CATCH). The project is a joint effort of the Dutch State Service for Cultural Heritage (RCE) and the Tilburg centre for Creative Computing (TiCC) of Tilburg University.
