The RICH team developed a system that is capable of automatic classification of heterogeneous coin collections. Our system is called Coin-o-matic and was the winner of the Muscle CIS coin classification competition 2007. In 2006, our system was already second in this competition.
Currently, we are adapting our system for the automatic recognition of historical coins. In particular, we are focussing on a dataset of Roman coins and a dataset of Merovingian coins. A screenshot of the system is shown below. The right image is the query image, whereas the left image is the best match that Coin-o-matic identified in the collection of Roman coins.
Note that Match 2 is displayed, because the best match is the coin itself (the query coin is also in the collection that is searched through). A movie in which the program is operated can be viewed here.
